Every December the same call comes in from West Boise, Kuna and the Eagle foothills: the freezer in the garage stopped running and the meat is soft, but nothing tripped and nothing smells burnt. The machine is not broken. It has been fooled by a garage that got as cold as its own inside. Here is how that happens and what actually helps.

A standard refrigerator has one thermostat, and it lives in the fresh-food section. Cold air spills from the freezer into the fridge compartment, and when the fridge side reads about 38 degrees the thermostat shuts the compressor off. On a January night in an unheated garage, the air around the box drops into the thirties on its own. The thermostat sees the target temperature, the compressor never starts, and the freezer side, which needs the compressor running to stay at zero, slowly climbs toward the garage temperature. Frozen food softens while the refrigerator section is perfectly happy. A chest freezer has its own thermostat, but compressor oil thickens below freezing and both types struggle.
The Treasure Valley makes this worse in two ways. First, the inversions. From mid December into January, cold air pools on the valley floor from Nampa to the Boise Bench and does not move for days, so a garage on a north-facing driveway in Meridian can sit in the twenties. Second, the sheer number of garage units. West Boise and Bench ranches from the 1970s and 1980s were built with a second refrigerator in the garage as a matter of course, and the new subdivisions in Kuna, Star and south Meridian have three-car garages with a chest freezer in the corner. Then July arrives, the same garage hits 110 degrees, and the compressor runs without rest.

Call when the freezer stays soft after the garage warms back above forty, when the compressor clicks and stops every few minutes, when the box hums but never gets cold, or when a cold snap has left water on the garage floor under a washer or refrigerator. Those point to a failed start relay, a seized compressor, a leaking evaporator or a split valve: real repairs rather than a temperature illusion. The technician tests with a meter, tells you whether the unit is worth fixing given its age, and writes one number that already includes the $99 diagnostic. Because the thermostat that controls the compressor is in the refrigerator section, and a garage in the thirties keeps that section cold without the compressor running. The freezer side then warms toward garage temperature. During a December inversion in Boise or Meridian this can go on for days. The machine is not faulty; it is outside its designed range.
Some manufacturers offer a garage heater kit that warms the thermostat area so the compressor keeps cycling; it fits specific models only. Otherwise the practical answers are moving the unit to a heated space, choosing a chest freezer rated for garage use, or keeping the garage above forty degrees. The technician can tell you which applies to your model during the visit.
It is the opposite problem. A Treasure Valley garage in July and August can reach well above 100 degrees, and the compressor runs almost continuously to fight it. Condenser coils packed with summer dust make it worse. The usual outcomes are a failed start relay, an overheated compressor, or a fan motor that gave up. All are diagnosed with a meter and repaired from the truck when the part makes sense.

Check with a thermometer, not by feel. Food that stayed at or below 40 degrees and still has ice crystals can generally be refrozen, though quality drops.
