Overland Rd is the straight shot: east from Five Mile past Cole Rd and Curtis Rd, and the Bench begins where the ground rises above the river plain. Franklin Rd or Emerald St get the truck to the northern edge near Orchard St in the same twelve minutes. From there the neighborhoods stack up in a grid: Vista Village and the Depot Bench around the old Boise Depot, Morris Hill, the Roosevelt and Latah blocks toward the rim, Hillcrest by the golf course, and the wider lots near Kootenai St. The airport sits at the south end, which is why we keep early and late windows open for Bench addresses; a lot of the people who live here work shifts at the airport, St. Luke's or Saint Alphonsus.
Bench houses are mostly 1950s and 1960s ranches with a second wave of 1970s split-levels, and the kitchens have been redone once or twice since. That means a modern French-door refrigerator in a spot sized for a thirty-inch unit, a dishwasher on a circuit that also runs the disposal, and laundry in a basement or a converted back porch with a dryer vent that takes two or three turns before it finds daylight. Boise city water on the Bench is hard, so scale narrows fill valves and coats dishwasher elements, and the dust that blows up from the airport flats packs vents and condenser coils. Older gas ranges with weak igniters and refrigerators with tired defrost systems round out a typical Bench week.

A basement gas dryer in a 1958 ranch, taking two cycles to dry towels. The vent went up, over a joist and out through the rim, with a bird screen at the end packed solid. Thermal fuse tested open. Fuse replaced, the run cleared from both ends, and the owner shown the screen so it would not clog again.
Top-freezer unit, food thawing in the freezer while the fridge section stayed cold. The evaporator fan had seized; the meter showed the motor open. New fan from truck stock, coil checked for ice, temperatures logged before leaving. The homeowner had been ready to buy a new refrigerator that afternoon.
A 1990s gas range in a remodeled kitchen a few blocks from the Depot, oven taking half an hour to reach 300. The bake igniter was drawing too little current to open the gas valve. Igniter replaced, oven brought to temperature and held, burners checked for good flame, written warranty on the counter.
Dishwasher in a split-level off Curtis, water pooling in the bottom after every cycle. The drain pump was packed with grit and a fragment of a broken dish, and the check valve was stiff with scale. Pump cleared and tested, valve replaced, three cycles run dry, and the air gap on the counter cleaned as well.
