Boise city water on the Bench comes off wells and the river and runs hard enough that a dishwasher shows it within a couple of years: the heating element grows a white crust, the spray arm holes plug one by one, and the inlet valve slows down. The kitchens along Latah St, Cassia St and around Vista Village were built without dishwashers, so the machine sits in a cabinet bay that was cut for it later, on a drain line that shares an old disposal and a supply that runs to a shutoff installed decades ago. A typical call: a Frigidaire on Roosevelt St, three years old, leaving cloudy glasses and a puddle in the sump, with an element so coated it could not be read by eye and a drain hose sagging behind the cabinet in a low loop.
Drain pump, check valve, or the connection to an aging disposal. We run the drain with the kick panel off, meter the pump, clear the check valve, and inspect the hose route. On the Bench the drain hose often runs flat behind the cabinet with no high loop, which lets dirty sink water back into the tub.
Water too cold from a scaled element, a short fill from a mineral-narrowed valve, plugged spray arms, or a wash pump that has lost pressure. We measure fill level and water temperature, meter the element and circulation motor, and descale or replace the arms and valve. The filter is cleaned as part of it.

A door latch that no longer registers, a control board relay, a thermal fuse on older Whirlpool and Kenmore models, or an outlet on an old kitchen circuit that has failed. We meter the latch and fuse first, then the board. A dishwasher that hums and does nothing is a seized wash pump.
A flattened door gasket, a spray arm throwing water at the door seam, a cracked sump, or a fill valve that seeps. We run the machine with the panel off and find the actual drip. Original hardwood under a Bench kitchen’s vinyl is worth protecting, so we check the subfloor for old water damage too.
A failed or scaled heating element, a vent that has stuck, a filter that has not been cleaned, or standing water that never drains fully. We test the element, clean the filter and sump, clear the drain, and set the rinse aid. Smells on the Bench usually trace back to the drain connection at the disposal.
The technician interrupts a cycle and looks: water level, water temperature, arms turning or not, water clear or carrying grit. The kick panel comes off and the meter goes on the inlet valve solenoid, the circulation motor, the drain pump, the heating element and the door latch. The filter and sump are pulled. On the Bench we spend extra time under the sink, checking the drain hose route, the disposal connection and the supply shutoff, because the plumbing around a retrofitted dishwasher is where half the problems live. The element is inspected for scale, and the house’s softener, if there is one, gets a question. One cause, one written number, and the repair only on your approval.

Usually, yes. A latch, a drain pump, a valve or an element on a budget Whirlpool or Frigidaire is a small, sensible repair.
