The washer is in the basement of a 1962 ranch off Latah St, the floor drain is doing its job, and the drum is still full. A Bench basement tells you a lot before the washer does. The supply hoses run to shutoff valves that were installed with the house, the drain is a standpipe cut into cast iron, and the washer is the third or fourth machine to sit on that same patch of concrete. Houses along Latah St, Roosevelt St and the streets behind Vista Village were built between 1950 and 1975 for a family and a wringer washer, and they have been adapted ever since. We reach the Bench from the shop in twelve minutes, Five Mile Rd to Overland Rd and east to Orchard St, and the truck carries pumps and valves for the machines those basements actually hold.
Boise city water on the Bench is hard, and a washer inlet valve shows it after five or six years: the screens clog, the fill slows, the machine throws a timing error. Older top-loaders lose lid switches, drive couplers and transmissions; the front-loaders installed in the last decade lose drain pumps and door locks. Rentals near Boise State and along Vista Ave add heavy use and a tenant who reports the problem late. One typical call: a Whirlpool top-loader in a Depot Bench garage that fills, agitates, then hums and stops before spin, with a broken coupler sitting in pieces on the motor shaft.
A drain pump with a jammed impeller or a dead motor, a kinked drain hose behind a machine crammed into a basement alcove, or a standpipe that has backed up. We drain the tub, clear the pump and filter, meter the pump motor, and replace it if the windings are open. The standpipe gets a look too.
On older top-loaders this is the motor coupler or the lid switch; on front-loaders it is the door lock, the belt or the motor control. The failed coupler is a five-minute find with the cabinet off. We replace the part, confirm the lid or door switch reports properly, and run a full spin under load.
Inlet valve screens packed with scale from Bench city water, or a valve solenoid that has weakened. We check the supply pressure, pull and clean or replace the screens, and meter the solenoids. Old rubber supply hoses that came with the previous washer get pointed out as a burst waiting to happen.
A cracked door boot, a split drain hose, a leaking tub seal, or a supply hose fitting that has let go. In a basement the water finds the floor drain and the leak can run for weeks unnoticed. We run the machine open, find the source, and replace the failed part before it soaks the framing.
Worn suspension on a top-loader, failed shocks on a front-loader, or a machine that was never leveled on an uneven old slab. A rumble that grows through spin is a bearing. We check drum play by hand, replace worn suspension parts, and level the machine on the floor it is actually sitting on.
A failed door lock holding the drum shut, a line filter or main board that has lost power, or an outlet on an old basement circuit that has quit. We meter the outlet first, then the lock and board. The drum is opened manually so you get your clothes back either way.
The technician looks at the whole setup first, because on the Bench the setup causes as many problems as the machine: the shutoffs, the hoses, the standpipe, the outlet, the clearance behind the washer. Then the machine is read for stored error codes if it has them, and the meter goes on: pump motor windings, inlet valve solenoids, door lock or lid switch continuity, drive motor. Top-loaders get the cabinet lifted and a short cycle watched by eye. Front-loaders get the pump filter pulled and the boot inspected. The supply screens are checked for scale on every Bench visit. With the fault named and one number written, the repair begins only when you approve.
Bench laundry rooms hold a wide spread of machines: Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore top-loaders that have been running since the previous owner, Samsung and LG front-loaders installed during a remodel, Speed Queen in the houses that got tired of replacing washers, and GE and Amana in the rentals along Overland Rd and near Boise State. Almost always we work on it where it sits. Basement alcoves in older Bench ranches are tight, but the cabinet comes off in place and most repairs need only the front or the top open. If a machine truly must be moved, we bring the dolly and floor protection and put it back exactly where it was.
If they are rubber and older than five years, yes, and we will tell you when we see them. A burst supply hose in a basement runs until someone notices, and on the Bench that can be a floor drain doing overtime. Braided replacements are a quick swap during the visit and are listed on the written number.

It depends on what failed. A coupler, lid switch, pump or valve on a fifteen-year-old Whirlpool or Kenmore top-loader is a normal, sensible repair. A transmission or a bearing on the same machine is a harder call. The written number tells you the cost before anything is done, and you decide with real information.
