Caldwell is our longest regular run. South on Five Mile Rd from the shop to Franklin Rd, west to the interstate at Ten Mile, then I-84 past Nampa, past the Karcher Rd interchange, and off at 10th Ave or Franklin Rd into town. The older core sits between Cleveland Blvd and the creek, where Indian Creek Plaza anchors downtown and the College of Idaho spreads its brick across the south side. Newer subdivisions ring the city on Middleton Rd to the north, along Ustick Rd to the east and out toward Lake Lowell to the south. Half an hour, give or take a train at the crossing, and the price is identical to a call five minutes from the shop.
Caldwell’s housing splits by age. Downtown and the blocks around the college are 1900s to 1950s houses with basement or back-porch laundry and kitchens remodeled around old plumbing; the subdivisions from the 2000s on carry builder appliance packages that fail street by street. City water comes from wells and runs hard, and the acreage past the city line runs on private wells that are harder still, sometimes with iron. This is farm country: onion and sugar-beet trucks, harvest dust, canal water on the fields, a wind that fills a dryer vent or a condenser in a season. Winter cold reaches every unheated garage, and the summer sun on a west-facing kitchen off Caldwell Blvd pushes a refrigerator to its limit.

A 1940s kitchen a few blocks from campus, dishwasher leaving a chalky film and finishing with water in the tub. Heavy scale had built on the heater and the drain hose ran flat under the sink. We descaled the tub and arms, replaced the opened heater, set a proper high loop and ran a full wash before the paperwork.
A kitchen refrigerator on the agricultural edge, running all day and never below fifty during onion harvest. The condenser was matted with field dust and the fan motor had seized. Coil cleaned, fan replaced from the truck, temperatures logged over the next half hour while the technician wrote the invoice.
A 2016 build with an electric dryer venting to the roof, drum turning and no heat. Dust and lint had plugged the cap and the thermal fuse had opened. Fuse replaced, run cleared to the roof, and the cap freed so it closed properly against the wind.

Caldwell washers fail on water first and age second. City well water scales the inlet screens until the machine fills too slowly and errors out; farmhouse wells outside town add iron sludge to the same screens. In the older houses near the college a twenty-year-old top-loader loses its coupler or lid switch, and in the subdivisions the builder front-loaders jam their drain pumps. Scale. Caldwell water leaves calcium in the small inlet screens at the back of the washer until the flow drops to a trickle, and well water outside town adds rust on top. The technician checks pressure at the hose bib, pulls the screens and tests the valve with a meter, then replaces the valve if it is restricted and times the fill on a real cycle.

It does. Dust from tilled fields and harvest traffic is fine enough to ride the wind into a vent cap, and once it mixes with lint it packs solid.
